David Cree - Owner of Clearpath SEO

Thursday Morning, May 15, 2008

The ability of coaches to utilize the Web to build their business is at various stages in the CAPC community. CAPC is at the conceptual stage of developing a new website right now.

For coaches, what are potential customers using the web for in their search for services today?  Are they seeking information?  Contact details?  Tools to use? And knowing this, what would you do to expand your coaching business?

Creating Successful Mastermind Groups

Play a Bigger Game by Playing and Learning With Your Peers

Thursday morning, March 20, 2008

Is your Coaching business in the growth phase and you are looking for ways to move to another level?

Are you finding that you are 'Doing it all yourself'?

Would you like insights from other business professionals?

Are you a new coach looking for enhanced learning opportunities that don't cost thousands of $$$?

The concept of the Mastermind Group was formally introduced by Napoleon Hill in the early 1900's. In his timeless classic, "Think And Grow Rich" he wrote about the Mastermind principle as:

"The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony. No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind."
At the March CAPC breakfast meeting, Bob Johnson will share stories of his success with his Executive Coach Mastermind group that has been ongoing for the past three years. Bob will define the intention behind the forming of the Group, its value for each of the participants and the growth each has personally experienced being part of this unique system. Learn what has worked, what hasn't and what lessons Bob would pass on if you considered a Mastermind Group for yourself.

"My own learning and personal growth from being a member of this Group has far surpassed any value I have received from other learning venues."
In a Mastermind Group, the agenda belongs to the group, and each person's participation is key. Your peers give you feedback, help you brainstorm new possibilities, and set up accountability structures that keep you focused and on track. You will create a community of supportive colleagues who will brainstorm together to move the group to new heights.

You'll gain tremendous insights, which can improve your business and personal life. Your Mastermind Group is like having an objective board of directors.

Plan to attend and have one of the Coaching community's Leaders share how his Mastermind Group has contributed to his success and learning and what you might do to create your own.

Who is Bob?

Bob is the past President of CAPC and one of the founders of the organization.

Bob's keynotes and workshops are dynamic, insipiring and refreshingly real, as well as practical and useful. Audiences of all sizes love Bob's authenticity, humour and his energetic and engaging style. You leave with a specific 'call to action' to consider a much 'Bigger Game' than what you may have imagined for yourself or your team.

Bob has spoken on numerous occasions at the International Coach Federation's annual conference, The Coaching and Mentoring Conference, local coaches' organizations and for corporate teams and groups.

CAPC Open Space Breakfast Meeting
(Using Revolutionary Open Space Technology)

Thursday morning, February 21, 2008

Over the past ten years CAPC has grown into a diverse and successful association. Our success has come through members' involvement in, and commitment to, delivering valuable training, seminars, and events. We have had encouraging feedback on our events AND people say they love the coffee breaks and networking as much as, if not more than, the formal presentations. Hmmmmmmmmmmm, something is up here.....what?

Concurrently, we have been flooded with ideas, requests, concepts and strategies to continue to grow the CAPC community, to expand the understanding and acceptance of coaching, and to support the development of coaching practices.......sooooooooooo many ideas!

What to do???  We'll provide and "open space" in order to facilitate the sharing of all that energy, passion and wisdom - a forum to give voice to the needs and desires of both new and seasoned coaches.

Our February meeting will be a networking and collaboration session designed by YOU. You will be briefed on the rules of engagement at the breakfast meeting (or if you are interested beforehand, check out the details at http://www.co-intelligence.org/P-Openspace.html

Bring your ideas, your desire, and your passion for promoting and growing the profession of Coaching. Topics that have been offered up for discussion so far are listed below. We invite your interests too.

  • A special interest group to assist new coaches in building their businesses
  • What can CAPC do to support experienced senior Coaches with mature practices?
  • What is the benefit of belonging to ICF and why get certified?
  • What can be done to further promote coaching within companies in Calgary?
  • Creating creative partnerships
  • Sales and marketing strategies to create a successful Coaching practice
  • What kind of website does CAPC need to support coaches and potential clients?

What other Special Interest Groups (SIGS) and discussions will you create, and how might they be supported by CAPC?

If you want to connect with like-minded individuals who share your area of passion and interest, then this meeting is for you!   See you there!

ANNOUNCING A SPECIAL EVENT FROM CAPC

January 24, 2008

A FUN, TRANSFORMATIONAL MORNING
with
Catherine Bell,   Conroy Ross Partners

The Enneagram - An introduction to transformational self-awareness

Please join us for an interactive introduction to the Enneagram (pronounced "Any - a - gram"). The Enneagram is a geometric figure that maps out nine fundamental personality types of human nature and their complex interrelationships.  It concerns itself with one element: Self-Knowledge.   It has been proven psychometrically, and is a powerful tool for coaches and their clients.   It points out:
  • Attitudes and gifts
  • How to 'observe and let go' of troublesome habits and reactions
  • Wake-up calls and Red Flags for each type
  • How to cultivate awareness in your daily life
Organizations are demanding a more people-focused perspective in order to attract, engage and retain valuable employees. The keys to success include being able to communicate effectively with others; to inspire them to share your vision and goals; and to keep them on track through effective direction. Communication can be challenging if personality, motivation, values and priorities are not taken into consideration. The Enneagram addresses all of those parameters. When personality variables are understood, communications can become exponentially more effective as people begin to recognize and value human diversity.

The Enneagram (and the Riso Hudson approach) is an extraordinary framework for understanding yourself, your colleagues, your clients, and an organization as a whole. Each "personality" type has its own way of relating to others, its own set of perceptions and preoccupations, and its own values and approaches to life.

What Enneagram type are you?

Please go to www.enneagraminstitute.com/Tests_Battery.asp

We highly recommend that you take The RHETI-independently validated full test (which costs $10) to get the most out of this session. (Also available is The Free RHETI Sampler). Please bring your results for an interactive, fun, and informative session with Catherine. You will learn a bit about yourself (or maybe a lot), and explore opportunities for your clients.

The Enneagram can help you to improve your self-awareness and help you and your clients work more effectively with others.

INFORMATION ON CATHERINE BELL

Catherine leads search assignments for executive and senior professionals in a number of key industries including renewables, telecommunications, high technology, power, infrastructure, oil and gas, and investment banking. Her specialty is building great teams, and she has helped many of her clients to build their organizations from start-up phase to maturity. She has worked with some of Canada's largest organizations.

Catherine has been trained in the Enneagram by Russ Hudson and Gayle Scott and uses the Enneagram with both clients and candidates.

Catherine has a special interest in leadership and is the author of "Stumbling Thoughtfully into Success - A Study of 29 Female Leaders in Calgary" - a research study that was released in 2002. She is a frequent speaker to business schools and companies on leadership and careers.

Sue Walden, Founder - ImprovWorks!
Improv to Ignite your Coaching Skills!

Merriam-Webster's Dictionary defines Improvise:

Internationally-acclaimed master practitioner of Applied Improvisation, Sue Walden will bring a taste of how improvisation training can be used to deepen, broaden and heighten our coaching skills, as well as other useful applications for our personal and professional lives. Be prepared for an hour of challenge, 'aha-s' and fun.

Sue has been working with coaches from San Francisco (her home) to New York, Spain, France, Sweden, Norway and the UK.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE
and Other Great Conversations

A CAPC Learning Event

CAPC members have clearly said that they value opportunities to:
  1. network with other coaches, and
  2. learn practical insights and skills that boost their coaching success.

Our Tricks of the Trade last year was a fantastic success and this October meeting will create a great CAPC event for new coaches, veteran coaches, and everyone in between.

Last year we had a number of experienced coaches provide a 'sample' of their special skills and techniques. The feedback was that people loved it and they wanted a more in-depth experience. So we are looking to increase the time available with each presenter and reduce the number of 'sample sessions' to accommodate your learning.

We have asked a number of our experienced coaches to share some of the most effective tips, tricks and techniques they have picked up over the years. It will be a chance to learn about -

  • Building effective relationships with challenging clients
  • Business building necessities
  • Cracking open perplexing issues
  • Getting unstuck
  • Using powerful question sequences
  • Finding solutions through creative coaching process
  • Making the hard look easy

This is an opportunity to go beyond basic coach training and discover how your skilled colleagues tackle demanding situations in the real world of personal/life coaching and coaching inside organizations.

You will explore these "tricks of the trade" in small groups, ask questions, and possibly share your own insights and methods. And our overall process will ensure that you make new coaching connections.

GIVING YOUR CLIENT "NEW EYES"

Albert Einstein said that "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."

As coaches, there are at least two critical times when helping our clients to see with "new eyes' makes all the difference.

  1. The first is when the focus of the coaching is explored. Whether the focus is seen as an issue, problem, opportunity or challenge, being able to see it from different points of view helps the client get unstuck and opens them to new directions.
  2. The second is when it is time to creatively generate solutions and action plans. New ways of seeing the options means a much greater chance of finding a workable solution and ultimate success.

In this program, a panel of experienced coaches, which includes Jacqueline Peters and Rona Fluney, will share how they help clients find new perspectives and possibilities. You will leave with practical ways to introduce more creative insight and solution finding into your coaching sessions, and may even come to see the process of coaching with your own 'new eyes'.

Questions are welcome and a live coaching demonstration will follow the discussion.

Jacqueline Peters, B.Sc., M.Ed.
Jacqueline has over 10 years experience providing coaching and leadership development opportunities for high performing business leaders and teams internationally. Using a variety of assessments and approaches, she partners with clients to customize high impact coaching and leadership development programs. Jacqueline has completed a B.Sc., a Diploma in Career Development, a M.Ed. in Adult Education, and certification as a corporate coach. She has twice served on the Board of the Calgary Association of Professional Coaches (CAPC).

Rona Fluney, CPCC, CCDP, CHRP

COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE AND COMMUNITIES OF INTEREST
Charlotte Holmlund

'Communities of practice' and 'communities of interest' are all around us. Some have a name; others don't. Most, if not all, of us belong to several of them whether we realize it or not - at work, at school, or in the community. Sometimes we take on the role of leader; other times we participate irregularly or from the sidelines. Whatever form our involvement takes, most of us are familiar with the experience of belonging to a community of practice.

Join us on Thursday, November 16th for this interactive session which will take a closer look at:

  • Various types of communities (of interest, practice, action, purpose, etc.)
  • Similarities / differences
  • Discussion on how CAPC demonstrates characteristics of one of these types of communities
  • What members do
  • Why people join (benefits)
  • Success factors
Charlotte Holmlund is employed at Enbridge Inc. as Advisor, Enterprise Knowledge Management. She holds a Masters of Arts degree in Knowledge Management from Royal Roads University. Charlotte's experience includes leadership of various information and knowledge-related initiatives within the private, public, nonprofit and post-secondary education sectors and has guided the development of communities of practice within several organizations.

Coaching for Emotional Fitness
An evening program presented by Warren Redman

As coaches we seek to empower our clients. We desire to offer tools that enable clients to discover their own strengths and achieve their own goals. We look for ways to enhance our practices and give added value to your clients, individually and corporately.

Warren Redman has worked for thirty years to create and develop the tools of Emotional Fitness and apply them to his coaching and training practice. These tools include Listening Power, Learning from Experience, the Lifescale, the Time Capsule, Group Dialogue, Storytelling, Dreamtime, the Mirror and Connections.

Each of these processes enables the coach to work at deeper levels with clients who wish to create long-lasting and satisfying changes in their personal and professional lives. In this session, you will learn what these tools are and have the opportunity to experience one of them - The Lifescale - in practice.

The Lifescale is a series of ten questions that help you and your clients to identify and understand the positive and negative emotional energies that cause satisfaction and frustration. This tool provides an opportunity for you as a coach to discover the patterns and connections that identify the potential growth for your client and help them to move forward with enhanced clarity and tenacity.

Warren Redman is the President of the Centre for Inner Balancing. He is the author of 15 books, including the award-winning "The 9 Steps to Emotional Fitness", and his latest book, "Recipes for Inner Peace".

The Art and Science of Great Public Speaking:
Turning Your Conversational Skills into Powerful Presentations
Ric Durrant

You may be a coach, trainer, consultant or manager. You may be nervous and hesitant about speaking in public, or practiced and confident. Here is a chance to gain the insight you need to take your speeches, presentations and media interviews to a new level of skill and impact.

The skills of great speakers tend to leave many people awestruck. The assumption is that these speakers have an innate ability that "I could never have". The truth, however, is that the skills of great communicators can be simply identified and practiced, with real benefits for your credibility, marketing and professional stature. Anyone with good conversation skills and a collection of life experiences (e.g. your average CAPC member) can significantly boost their speaking ability in the short term, and practice to become a truly powerful speaker in the long term.

The science of public speaking is rooted in the psychology of learning and communication. The art rests in skills like story telling and painting pictures with words. You will leave with insights from both the art and science of public speaking, and a practical set of speaking and presentation techniques to boost your skill and confidence.

Your presenter will be Ric Durrant, CAPC Director of Communication. Ric has held senior communication positions and consulted as a communication strategist for many years. He is the creator of "Communicating Like a Leader", a training/coaching program developed for professionals and executives striving to enhance their public speaking skills. He holds a Masters degree in psychology specializing in learning and development (U of C), and a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching (Faculty of Management, Royal Roads University).

The Preferred Workplace Model
Rael Kalley

Rael Kalley, President of Strategic Pathways, has been actively coaching since 1994. He focuses on organizational development and has developed a number of product and service innovations including the "On Course" Performance Coaching program, "Corporate Ombuds", Employee Engagement Asessments and "The Preferred Workplace" model to enhance his executive coaching practice. He also co-created and instructs the Corporate Performance Coaching coaches training program with colleague Dr. Pat Pitsel.

This compelling program, successfully implemented in over 50 Canadian companies, combines leadership and management development, shared team accountability and performance coaching. The "Preferred Workplace" engages all employees within an organization to assume a greater responsibility and commitment toward achieving specific results. This collaborative process creates increased communication and understanding between team members and enhances the unique relationship they have with other work areas. This understanding translates to increased productivity, decreased conflict and an overall improvement in employee satisfaction.

Organizations that are willing to commit their resources and energies toward creating a "Preferred Workplace", experience a decrease in costly employee turnover, heightened employee involvement and responsibility, and increased inter-department collaboration. Rael will share the fundamental aspects of this practical and empowering process.

The Michelangelo Leader
June 16, 2005
Rick Tamlyn

This exciting interactive presentation had participants gain a sense of their own magnificence, strength and power. It was about waking up the "leader" within each one of us. It taught us that communicating and interacting with people while knowing there is greatness within each and every person has a dramatic impact on the individual and the organization. We learned that "leadership at its best" is being able to bring out the best in people rather than trying to make ourselves "look good".

Are You Putting All Your 'Coaching Eggs' In One Basket?
May 19, 2005
Andrea Lee

May's breakfast meeting was about discovering how to build a lifetime of coaching income as well as learning the Multiple Streams Product Funnel and how can it create more clients for your 1-on-1 practice.

We were asked to leave aside our previous ideas of what coaching success is, and get ready to stretch into new definitions.

The Magnetic Pull of Our Hopes and Fears
April 21, 2005
Charlie Badenhop

Charlie gave us a first hand experience of how our expectations, when entering into a relationship, act as a magnet to attract and elicit specific responses from others. Expect a hard time from another person and he or she will tend to give you just that. Expect that something good will transpire and your counterpart will tend to agree. Every human being intuitively reads the non-verbal signals given off by their counterparts.

Our March meeting, for members only, included a lively discussion regarding ICF credentialing and regulation of the coaching industry. We were given an opportunity to voice our opinion for and against regulation.

  • Communicating your Brand
  • The Seven Laws of Personal Branding

Coaching The Conflict Mountain: Assisting People To Manage Differences                                                            Creatively, Constructively & Effectively

October 21, 2004

For this meeting, we had 2 presenters: Nancy Love and Ann Hasselquist. Nancy and Ann examined this specialized niche in the burgeoning field of coaching and discussed the important role coaching plays in promoting the transfer of learning from training programs back into the reality of the workplace. Coaches also learned how conflict coaching provides effective ways to support the behavioural changes needed for people to gain and sustain three aspects of the human experience: cognition, emotion, and behaviour. Conflict coaching assists people to gain insight into this predictable cycle (i.e., the retaliatory cycle) helping them discover where the cycle can be stopped. We were taught that, through conflict coaching, clients are able to create and develop alternative strategies for managing differences in a constructive and productive way.

Ethics and the Professional Coach

September 16, 2004

Bob Acton, Ph.D., C.Psych.

A discussion took place about various aspects of ethics, their importance to the profession of coaching, and how the ethical guidelines serve to protect the public. Also included was a group discussion of case vignettes that brought to life some of the ethical issues facing coaches in their practice.

Marketing Your Business With Words
June 16, 2004
Debbie Elicksen

Debbie Elicksen provided a no-nonsense approach to publishing - particularly for those who are time-stresed, have a passion for an idea, and want to leave a positive impact. Her presentation included instruction on how to identify, plan and prepare types of public relations and marketing tools; the essence of copywriting; understanding media needs versus what you want to communicate; and understanding the difference between Public Service Announcements, media advisories, backgrounders, and press releases.

Experiential-Based Coaching - Why It Works With Individuals And Teams

January 15, 2004

"What I hear I forget, what I see I remember, what I do I understand." This famous quote by Confucius elegantly describes the power of experiential-based learning. Vivian Hitchman's presentation illustrated how experiential exercises act as mirrors to encourage individual awareness and learning, and more truthful group dialogue. The audience engaged in an experiential activity and follow-up conversation to demonstrate the integrative power and fun of 'Learning by Doing'.
